Athletes overpaid? I think not.

by Craig Bennett

Do professional athletes really deserve the money that they make? Just today Alex Rodriguez, a third baseman for the New York Yankees, just got a raise from the organization to a ten year deal worth approximately 305 million dollars, a raise worth approximately 5 million dollars per year. On the other hand a professor at a University may get a raise of 5,000 dollars in one year. Is this just? In the following I will explain how the athletes deserve the money they are paid.

You see paying athletes a lot of money can be explained through a simple concept known as supply and demand.

The supply, or high quality professional athletes across the world is very low. And the demand for athletes with tons of talent by professional teams across the world is very high and some organizations such as the Yankees are willing to pay almost any price to get the talent that they feel they need.

But, other paid professionals such as teachers do not make as much athletes, and for a good reason. I believe that it is much easier to become a teacher than it is to become a professional athlete. Also, the supply of teachers is much higher than is the supply of professional athletes.
So that is the reason why professional athletes deserve the millions of dollars that they earn. Their supply is very low and professional teams’ demand for these athletes is very high and they are willing to pay whatever they need to so the athlete will join and benefit their team.

This is true, however, i think that you may have also forgot to mention about the amount of revenue that the high paid players bring in. As a spectator, fans are willing to pay money to come watch these games. Now, the price per ticket may not be too over-the-top, but when revenue is calculated after one game, it is only fair for the big named players to be given a proportional share of the income. This goes beyond just being a great athlete, although it is interlinked. So even though the player is in demand within the league, without all of the money coming in from the games, endorsements, and signings, these players could not make the amount of money that they do.

I think that some athletes deserve the amount of money they make and others I think get paid way to much. Although all these franchises have the money to pay for their players they shouldn't be paying that much. Some of the players on the New York Yankee's are the most expensive team in the MLB.

Once again this topic can go both ways. Although this blog is very informative and very personnal opioniated. I don't think that the best players in the world are being over paid like Tiger Woods, but I think that other people in the athletic business are being paid, especially people that arent being good influences or good role models for the economy. Many athletes deserve the money they make because they have talent and work hard to be a good role model.
